Purpose

This site, and the research it supports, is dedicated to the effort to obtain a more complete understanding of the facts surrounding the 2004 exposure of approximately 3,500 Duke Hospitals surgery patients to hydraulic fluid used in error in the sterilizing process for instruments used on patients in surgery. The information gained from this research is important to health care planning for the victims and to the improvement of medical safety practices at Duke Hospitals and medical facilities nationwide.
